FAQ › Training › answer 14

What to do if your knees are aching? Can it be cured? (I’m a mountain bike cyclist).

Aching knees are a complex issue. First of all, it is necessary to verify the training load, which to a large extent must be tailored to your individual abilities. The abilities are currently examined with due regard to efficiency and achievement of training assumptions.

By means of various measuring devices such as Lactaz, the degree of muscles acidity is measured. However, muscles acidity as the basis for establishing training load can be dangerous as after training muscles regenerate faster than connective tissues including tendons and ligaments. As a result, determining of the training load requires paying attention to the organism as a whole and not only its ability to perform training – this guarantees the occurrence of training units based on supercompensation process after training.

Yet another issue is supplementation which facilitates after training regeneration. It is necessary to increase the amount of ingested amino acids (especially glycine and proline) Vit C with selenium and Vit E.

Moreover, in the period of after training and competition regeneration you should ingest food supplements to regenerate your joints as well as take some regenerative therapy, massage is especially recommended (including its specialised centrifugal form applied in sports – applied on the most strained joints).

To sum up, in your case the series of competitions you want to take part in should be verified and you should introduce period of decreased training loads during in which you should introduce an appropriate supplementation and after training regeneration which should solve most of your problems. Nevertheless in the next macrocycle (be it year or six month long) you should appropriately select your training loads and apply various stimuli by introducing other disciplines into your training which will sensitise you to the cycling training and will additionally balance any possible strength disproportions and will prepare organism to the next training stage (swimming, gym etc – so called complementary motoric base trainings) and also introduce appropriately chosen food supplementation taking into consideration their amount so as the peak of their effect complied with the periods of the greatest training strain and competitions.
